Serious times call for engaging writers.
Norwegian art to climate change, I make readers care.
Nobody's going to read your solution to the apocalypse if you don't pull them in.
I’ve been writing professionally since 1995. Although I was the "Outstanding Graduating Senior" of my journalism class in 1989, my career almost didn't happen. Interning at Los Angeles Daily News, I was profoundly impacted by a Desk Editor who espoused the values of neutrality in journalism. (Can you imagine?) Because I had strong opinions about almost everything, this seemed untenable. I quit writing for newspapers upon graduation. I started bathing dogs. Professionally. Nobody who paid for my education saw that coming.
Fortunately, my strong opinions about dogs landed me a job writing for an animal shelter. Turns out, a well-written strong opinion raises money. Thus launched a writing career that has given me opportunities to research and write about higher education, climate change, women's health, hospice care, justice, art, Norwegian culture, tax-advantageous philanthropy, conservation cemeteries, ethical food systems and homeless animals. I write to simplify complex issues and get folks' mirror neurons firing. When it happens, readers are statistically more likely to engage.
